What is COSHH monitoring and when is it required?
COSHH monitoring involves:
- Measuring airborne contaminants like dust, fumes, vapours, mists, or gases
- Using personal sampling, static monitors, or real-time instruments
- Comparing results to Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs)
- Confirming that your control measures (e.g. ventilation, PPE) are effective
You must carry out COSHH monitoring when: - Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs) may be approached or exceeded
– For example, during welding, spraying, or solvent use - You're working with carcinogens or respiratory sensitizers
– e.g. silica dust, isocyanates, benzene - You rely on controls (like PPE or LEV) to reduce exposure
– Monitoring shows if they’re working properly - You can’t guarantee exposure is controlled without measurement
– Especially when processes create invisible or unpredictable risks - You're conducting a COSHH risk assessment and need data
– Monitoring helps you make informed decisions
