In November 2024, an Inhalable and Respirable Dust – Hazardous Substance Assessment was conducted at a food manufacturing facility in Barnsley to evaluate airborne dust exposure and ensure a safe working environment. The assessment focused on mixer operatives and maintenance workers, who frequently handle ingredients and work near equipment generating airborne dust.
The results showed that inhalable and respirable dust levels were below Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs), meaning no immediate risks were identified. However, exposure for maintenance operatives in fabrication areas was considered significant, as levels approached recommended precautionary limits. This suggests that while overall conditions are safe, further improvements could help reduce long-term exposure risks.
To enhance safety, the report recommended improving ventilation, ensuring workers wear respiratory protective equipment (RPE) and enforcing better dust suppression methods during material handling. Regular air monitoring and employee training were also advised to maintain control over exposure risks.
By following these steps and continuing routine assessments, the facility can keep dust levels in check, ensuring a cleaner and safer workplace for all employees.
