In November 2024, a Dust – Hazardous Substance Assessment was conducted at a wood recycling facility in Alton to evaluate dust exposure and ensure a safe working environment. The assessment focused on areas where wood processing, shredding and loading operations generate airborne dust, which can pose respiratory risks.
The results showed that inhalable dust levels, including both hardwood and softwood dust, were significant but remained below Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs). However, because exposure exceeded 10% of the limit, further precautions were recommended to minimise long-term risks. Respirable dust levels were found to be lower but still required close monitoring.
To control dust exposure, the report suggested improving mist cannon efficiency, reducing the use of compressed air for cleaning, enforcing respiratory protective equipment (RPE) use, and implementing job rotation to reduce prolonged exposure. Health surveillance for employees regularly exposed to dust was also recommended.
By implementing these measures and continuing routine air quality monitoring, the facility can effectively manage dust exposure, ensuring a safer and healthier workplace for employees.
