How can wood dust exposure be reduced in a sawmill?

Reducing exposure in sawmills usually involves a mix of engineering controls and good daily habits. The biggest improvements come from effective LEV systems, such as extraction hoods fitted directly to machines. Ensuring ducting is sealed, filters are maintained, and airflow stays strong is key.

Housekeeping also matters — sweeping often just recirculates dust into the air, so vacuum systems with HEPA filters work better. Using sharper blades and well-maintained cutters helps reduce dust at the source.

Training workers to position themselves correctly, avoid leaning over cutting paths, and report blockages early also helps. It’s a mix of equipment and behaviour.
