As part of their ongoing commitment to health and safety legislation compliance, a company in Mansfield commissioned Sysco Environmental Ltd to assess occupational exposure to hazardous substances, with a specific focus on wood dust. The assessment aimed to measure atmospheric concentrations of various hazardous contaminants, identify exposure groups and patterns, establish daily personal exposure levels, and advise on suitable risk control measures.
Sysco Environmental Ltd conducted the air monitoring in line with the COSHH Regulations 2002. This thorough evaluation covered key areas where employees might be exposed to hazardous substances, providing a comprehensive analysis of the workplace environment.
The air monitoring results revealed exposure levels for several hazardous substances. Specifically, the assessment focused on employees in the Bench Joinery and Machine Workshop, where exposure to hardwood dust was notable. Similarly, in the spray room, operatives were monitored for exposure to isocyanates and other volatile organic compounds.
The findings underscored the importance of maintaining and improving control measures to ensure that exposure levels, particularly to wood dust, remain as low as reasonably practicable. Recommendations included enhancing personal protective equipment (PPE) usage and improving local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems to mitigate the risks associated with hazardous substance exposure.
