If exposure exceeds the Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL), it means your current controls are not working well enough. The first step is usually to stop or adjust the task and review what caused the spike — poor extraction, dull blades, wrong sanding discs, or too many tasks happening at once can all increase dust levels.
The HSE takes wood dust seriously. If an inspector visits during high exposure and sees no monitoring or poor controls, they can issue an improvement notice, fees for intervention, or even stop work altogether. It’s not about punishment — it’s about preventing long-term respiratory problems for workers.
Every exceedance needs a documented review and corrective action so it doesn’t happen again.
