Sysco Environmental Ltd conducted an assessment of hand-arm vibration at a municipal site in Carlisle. The goal was to measure employees' daily exposure to vibration, identify sources of excessive vibration, and recommend effective control measures.
Employees in the Grounds and Cemetery departments were found to be exposed to significant vibration levels, particularly from equipment such as leaf blowers, strimmers, and mowers. Some tools, especially within the Transport department, generated high levels of vibration, exceeding safe limits in under a minute.
To mitigate these risks, the following actions are recommended:
1. **Tool Replacement**: Replace high-vibration tools with newer, low-vibration models, particularly the air impact guns and hammer drills.
2. **Health Surveillance**: Implement an initial and annual health surveillance program to monitor the effects of vibration on employees' health.
3. **Training and Information**: Educate employees about the risks of vibration exposure, safe working practices, and the importance of using protective equipment.
4. **Regular Reviews**: Continuously review and update the vibration exposure assessment, especially when new tools are introduced or work practices change.
By following these recommendations, the municipal site can significantly reduce the risk of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS), ensure compliance with the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005, and promote a safer, healthier working environment for all employees.
