In January 2025, a Hand Arm Vibration Assessment was carried out at a worksite in Derbyshire to monitor how much vibration workers are exposed to when using handheld power tools. The assessment aimed to make sure that employees aren't at risk of developing conditions like Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), which can be caused by long-term use of vibrating equipment.
The findings showed that most tools used onsite stayed below the legal action and limit values, which is a good sign. However, the Makita Demo Hammer 8KG stood out, with potential to exceed safe limits if used for more than 16 minutes a day. Because of this, it was recommended that the tool be removed from service, especially since alternative demo hammers produced lower levels of vibration.
Other suggestions included keeping up with regular tool maintenance, tracking how long tools are actually used during shifts and continuing to provide health surveillance for workers.
By sticking to these practical measures, the site can keep vibration risks low and make sure staff stay safe and protected while getting the job done.
