Sysco Environmental LTD conducted a hand-arm vibration (HAV) assessment at a facility in Grantham, focusing on the fettling area where workers use a variety of power tools. The goal was to determine the exposure levels of operatives to vibration from these tools and ensure they fall within safe limits.
The assessment found that some workers, particularly those using tools like the 3M Orbital Sander, are at risk of exceeding the exposure action value, which could lead to long-term health issues such as Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS). One worker, was highlighted for exceeding the action value due to the extended use of certain tools.
To address these concerns, the report recommended reducing tool usage times, improving maintenance practices, and implementing a formal system to track how long workers use each tool. Additionally, the use of anti-vibration gloves and regular health surveillance was suggested to help mitigate risks.
By following these recommendations, the company can ensure a safer working environment and reduce the risk of vibration-related injuries.
