In October 2024, a Hand Arm Vibration Assessment was carried out across multiple campuses in Hertfordshire to get a clear picture of how much vibration grounds staff are exposed to while using handheld power tools for maintenance and landscaping.
The assessment covered a wide range of equipment; from hedge cutters and strimmers to chainsaws and rotary mowers. It turns out that several tools pushed daily vibration levels close to or even beyond the action and limit thresholds, especially when used for extended periods. Depending on the tool and the location, certain tasks could lead to overexposure if workers aren’t careful with usage time.
The report gave a solid list of recommendations to help keep things safe such as better rotation of tasks, routine tool maintenance and keeping a proper log of how long tools are used. Health surveillance for workers exposed regularly was also advised to stay ahead of any issues.
With a few simple steps and some smart planning, the team can stay safe, stick to regulations and keep all those green spaces looking great without risking their health.
