Sysco Environmental conducted a hand arm vibration (HAV) assessment at a hospital facility in Sunderland, where employees regularly use power tools. The aim was to determine if the vibrations from these tools could cause any long-term health issues, such as hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS), and suggest ways to manage the risks.
The team evaluated different groups, including joiners, electricians, and mechanics, who often use power tools like drills, saws, and grinders. None of the tools used by joiners and electricians posed a significant risk, staying well below the limits. However, mechanics using certain tools, particularly the Dewalt Reciprocal Saw, faced higher vibration levels that could potentially exceed the safety action values.
To reduce the risks, it was recommended to limit the use of high-vibration tools, regularly maintain them, and rotate their use among workers. Health checks were also advised for employees regularly exposed to vibrations. Overall, this was an important step in keeping employees safe from long-term vibration-related health issues.
