A HAV assessment is used to assess the vibration risk from tools and or machinery in order to determine the risks and how these can be managed so that the workers are not at risk of developing conditions such as Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS). It is crucial as it will ensure that the organisation is in compliance with the health and safety regulations and laws as well as protect the well-being of the employees.
If a HAV assessment is not made, then exposure to vibrations will not be well monitored thus exposing the workers to conditions such as Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), carpal tunnel syndrome among others. This may cause permanent damage to nerves and blood vessels, weakness of grip, and thus low productivity. The employers may be liable to pay compensation, face legal consequences, and high insurance premiums, and suffer loss of reputation for non-adherence to health and safety standards. It also leads to poor employee morale, and early signing out from the company through quitting or transferring to other companies.
