In October 2024, a Whole Body Vibration Assessment was carried out across various campuses in Hertfordshire to check if grounds maintenance staff were being exposed to any uncomfortable or potentially harmful levels of vibration while using ride-on mowers, tractors, and similar equipment. The results were reassuring and showed all vibration levels recorded were well below the action threshold, meaning there's no cause for concern. Even when accounting for any bumps or jolts during use, the vibration dose values (VDV) stayed within safe limits across all locations.
Most staff were already following good practices like adjusting seats correctly and avoiding rough terrain, which helped keep exposure low. The report recommended continuing with these habits, offering refresher training on correct seating posture and regularly maintaining the vehicles to keep suspension and tyres in top condition.
By keeping up with these simple steps, the team can carry on doing their work efficiently while staying comfortable and safe during long hours of vehicle use.
