How much whole body vibration exposure is dangerous?

Whole body vibration (WBV) becomes risky when exposure regularly goes beyond the limits set by the UK’s Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005. The Exposure Action Value (EAV) is 0.5 m/s², averaged over an 8-hour day. If workers hit this level, employers need to take steps to reduce exposure. The Exposure Limit Value (ELV) is 1.15 m/s², and exceeding that is not legally allowed.

It’s important to realise that danger isn’t just about numbers. Long-term exposure to lower levels of vibration can still lead to back pain, joint problems, and circulation issues. The risk also depends on how long a person is exposed, their posture, and the type of machinery being used.

In short, if employees are exposed near or above the EAV, you should take it seriously and act quickly.
