In November 2024, a Noise Assessment was carried out at a food manufacturing facility in Barnsley to evaluate workplace noise levels and ensure employee safety. The assessment focused on low-risk and high-risk production areas, where various machinery and equipment contribute to noise exposure. The results showed that employees in both low-risk and high-risk areas were exposed to noise levels exceeding 85 dB(A), making hearing protection mandatory in these zones. Key noise sources included metal-on-metal contact, production machinery and ventilation systems. Employees working with cooked and raw meat processing equipment were among those exposed to the highest levels.
To manage noise exposure, the report recommended enhancing training on proper ear protection use, enforcing hearing protection in designated areas and maintaining machinery to reduce excess noise. Additional strategies, such as installing noise barriers and rotating staff between noisy and quieter tasks, were also suggested.
By implementing these recommendations and continuing routine noise monitoring, the facility can maintain a safe working environment, ensuring long-term hearing protection for employees.
