In November 2024, a Noise Assessment was conducted by our team at a wood recycling facility in Tilbury to measure noise exposure levels and ensure a safe working environment for employees. The focus was on high-noise areas, particularly the external yard, shredding operations and vehicle cleaning areas, where machinery and equipment contribute to workplace noise.
The results showed that employees working around shredders and heavy machinery were exposed to noise levels exceeding 85 dB(A), requiring mandatory hearing protection. Workers operating excavators and loading shovels inside enclosed cabins experienced lower noise levels, making hearing protection optional in those areas.
To reduce noise exposure, the report recommended minimising unnecessary use of compressed air, maintaining equipment to limit excess noise, and enforcing hearing protection requirements in designated high-noise zones. Regular job rotation and hearing surveillance programs were also suggested to prevent long-term hearing damage.
By following these recommendations and continuing routine noise monitoring, the facility can maintain a safer and more comfortable workplace, ensuring employees remain protected from excessive noise exposure.
