Sysco Environmental Ltd recently conducted a workplace noise assessment at an auto parts facility in Godalming. The goal was to evaluate employee exposure to noise and recommend control measures to ensure a safe working environment. The assessment was carried out in strict accordance with the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005.
The facility specialises in the recovery of precious metals from catalytic converters, with key areas assessed including the Decant area and the Laboratory. Our team measured daily personal exposure levels (LEpd) and peak sound pressure levels (LCpeak) for operatives in various roles, including those at the cutting and shears stations, and in the laboratory.
Results indicated that noise levels for operatives at the cutting and shears stations ranged from 88 to 95 dB(A), with peak sound pressures between 136 to 144 dB(C). In the mixer and laboratory area, noise levels were around 83 dB(A) with peak sound pressures at 138 dB(C). These levels necessitate the use of hearing protection, especially in the Decant area.
To mitigate these exposures, several recommendations were made. Reducing metal-on-metal impact noises by ensuring employees carefully place scrap metal components into skips, rather than dropping them, is essential. Health surveillance should be provided to employees regularly exposed to noise levels above the Upper Action Value of 85 dB(A). Training employees on the correct use of ear plugs and installing instructional signage are also critical steps.
