Control of Noise at Work Assessment in New Forest, Hampshire

Tucked away in the New Forest area of Hampshire, this project focused on helping a busy manufacturing site get a clearer picture of its everyday noise environment. With different work areas running at the same time and plenty of activity across the floor, the goal was simple: understand where noise might be becoming a problem and make sure people working there were properly protected.

Over a couple of working days, the site was assessed during normal operations. This meant no “best behaviour” or staged conditions — everything was captured as it actually happens in real life. Different work zones were observed, from machine areas to fabrication spaces, to see how sound levels varied throughout the day. This kind of real-world snapshot is important because it reflects what staff are genuinely exposed to, not just what looks fine on paper.

What came through clearly is that some areas were naturally louder than others, especially where power tools and machinery are used regularly. While hearing protection was already available on site, the project highlighted the importance of matching protection properly to the task, rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach. Too much protection can be just as problematic as too little, as it can affect communication and awareness.

The assessment didn’t just stop at identifying noise – it also looked at how working patterns, task rotation, and general layout could help reduce everyday exposure in a more practical way. Simple changes, like adjusting how tasks are shared out or reviewing equipment choices over time, can make a big difference without disrupting productivity.

Overall, this project was a solid step toward making the workplace safer, more comfortable, and fully aligned with good practice for noise control. It’s a great example of how understanding your working environment properly helps protect both people and performance in the long run.

Noise Assessment in Alton

In November 2024, a Noise Assessment was conducted at a wood recycling facility in Alton to evaluate noise exposure levels and ensure a safe work environment for employees. The assessment focused on external yard operations, including shredding activities, excavator use and vehicle cleaning, where machinery and equipment contribute to workplace noise.

The results showed that workers operating heavy machinery, such as shredders and mist cannons, were exposed to noise levels above 85 dB(A), making hearing protection mandatory. Employees working inside enclosed vehicle cabins had lower noise exposure, while those overseeing shredding operations at a distance were in areas where hearing protection was recommended but not required.

To improve noise management, the report suggested reducing unnecessary compressed air use, maintaining equipment to limit excess noise, and enforcing hearing protection in high-noise zones. Regular hearing surveillance and noise awareness training were also advised.

By implementing these recommendations and continuing routine noise monitoring, the facility can maintain a safer and more comfortable workplace, ensuring employees are well-protected from excessive noise exposure.
