How are noise levels tested in the workplace?
Noise levels in the workplace are tested using specific instruments and procedures to ensure they comply with health and safety regulations—particularly the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 in the UK. Two main types of instruments are used:
a. Sound Level Meter (SLM)
- Measures instantaneous sound pressure levels (in decibels, dB).
- Used for spot checks and identifying noisy tasks or areas.
- Class 1 or Class 2 meters are used, with Class 1 being more accurate.
b. Personal Noise Dosimeter - Worn by employees during a work shift.
- Measures cumulative noise exposure over time (typically 8 hours).
- Provides an accurate picture of real-world exposure.
