Control of Noise at Work in Lincolnshire

This project took place at an industrial site in Lincolnshire, focusing on workplace noise levels and how they might affect staff over time. The assessment was all about understanding what employees are actually exposed to during a typical workday — especially in noisy environments like production floors and machinery zones.

We walked the site, looked at different roles and tasks, and checked where people spend their time. It was a good opportunity to see what’s working already and where there’s room to improve when it comes to protecting hearing health. Some control measures were in place, like ear protection and signage, but we also spotted a few areas where things could be clearer or more consistent.

The goal here wasn’t just about ticking boxes — it was about helping the business stay ahead of regulations while creating a more comfortable and safer workplace for the team. A few quick wins and some long-term tweaks were suggested, making it easier for the company to manage its noise risks going forward. A solid step toward better sound management in a busy, real-world setting.

Noise Assessment in Lincolnshire town

In December 2024, a Noise Assessment was conducted at a renewable energy plant in Brigg to evaluate workplace noise exposure and ensure employees are protected from excessive noise. The assessment focused on fuel lines, straw lines, control rooms and maintenance areas, where machinery and equipment contribute to high noise levels.

The results showed that maintenance operatives working near fuel lines were exposed to noise levels exceeding 85 dB(A), meaning mandatory hearing protection is required. Employees working in straw line operations and control rooms had noise exposure above 80 dB(A), where hearing protection is recommended but not mandatory. Workers in straw barns experienced lower noise levels, staying within safe limits.

To improve noise control, the report recommended implementing job rotation, improving machinery maintenance and enforcing hearing protection use in high-noise areas. Providing training on noise risks and conducting regular hearing checks was also advised.

By following these recommendations and continuing regular noise monitoring, the facility can ensure a safer and more comfortable working environment, protecting employees from long-term hearing damage.
