In December 2024, a Noise Assessment was carried out at a Depot in Newcastle to check noise levels and make sure employees are working in a safe environment. The assessment focused on different roles, including fitters, electricians, train presentation operatives and reception staff, to determine if their daily noise exposure exceeded safe limits.
The results showed that fitters and electricians were exposed to noise levels above the upper action value of 85 dB(A), particularly when working near running train engines or carrying out maintenance in pits. This means that hearing protection is mandatory for these workers. Train presentation operatives and reception staff had lower but still notable noise exposure, requiring optional hearing protection.
To improve safety, the report recommended better noise control measures, such as reducing unnecessary idling of train engines, ensuring tools are well-maintained to minimise noise, and rotating workers between loud and quiet tasks.
By sticking to these recommendations and ensuring proper use of hearing protection the Depot can keep noise exposure under control and protect workers' hearing for the long run
