Understanding HAVS: What It Is and How to Prevent It

Understanding HAVS: What It Is and How to Prevent It

Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) is a common health issue in the UK, but it often gets overlooked. It affects many workers who use vibrating tools every day.

As a beacon of workplace safety and an advocate for worker health, we’ve seen how vibration injuries can easily happen if the right safety steps aren't in place. The harm adds up over time and can’t be fixed. But the good news is, it can be prevented if handled the right way.

This guide explains what HAVS is, what to look for, and how employers and workers can stay safe under UK rules.

Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) is a health problem caused by being around hand-arm vibration for too long. This usually happens when using tools like:

  • Angle grinders
  • Drills and breakers
  • Chainsaws and hedge trimmers
  • Sanders and polishers
  • Impact wrenches or needle guns
Over time, the vibration hurts the nerves, blood vessels, and joints in your hands and arms. If you don't take care of it, it can lead to lasting damage.

HAVS is known as a workplace disease in the UK, so it's important to stop it from happening, not just deal with it after it starts.

HAVS symptoms usually appear slowly, so you might not notice them at first. Common signs are:

  • Tingling and numbness in your fingers (especially after using tools)
  • Not being able to feel things well
  • Fingers turning white when it's cold (this is also called vibration white finger)
  • Trouble holding things
  • Pain and stiffness in your hands, wrists, or arms

If you don't get treatment, these symptoms can become permanent and affect your work and everyday life.

The main reasons are being around hand-arm vibration for a long time, not taking care of tools, and not switching between tasks that involve a lot of vibration.

Every time you use a vibrating tool, it causes small damage to the blood vessels and nerves in your hand. This damage adds up over time and can lead to problems with your nerves and blood flow.

The stronger the vibration and the longer you're around it, the more likely you are to get HAVS.

The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 say that employers must:

  • Figure out the vibration risks to workers.
  • Do what they can to lower the risk as much as possible.
Make sure daily vibration levels don't go over:
  • Exposure Action Value (EAV): 2.5 m/s² A(8)
  • Exposure Limit Value (ELV): 5 m/s² A(8)
  • Check the health of workers who are often around vibration.
  • Teach workers how to spot and report early signs of HAVS.
If you don't follow these rules, the HSE can take action, fine you, and, more importantly, cause long-term harm to workers.

There are many ways to stop HAVS at work:

A. Find Out and Check Exposure

Start by checking for HAV risks carefully. Measure how much vibration tools make and figure out daily exposure using the HSE's guide or a survey at your workplace.

B. Put Safety Steps in Place

  • Use tools that don't vibrate as much if you can.
  • Keep all equipment in good shape and fix it regularly.
  • Only use anti-vibration gloves as extra protection.
  • Limit how long people are around vibration by switching jobs.
  • Take breaks from using tools or do tasks that don't involve vibration.
C. Train and Inform People

Teach workers about the risks of vibration and why it's important to report early symptoms. Holding tools the right way and using less force can also lower vibration.

D. Check Health Regularly

Regular health checks can help find early signs before the damage is permanent. Workers should tell you right away if they feel tingling, numbness, or whitening in their fingers.

E. Keep Records

Keep detailed records of vibration levels, risk checks, and health check results. This helps you follow the rules and shows that you're doing your best to protect workers' health.

Regular HAV checks are important because even if you have good intentions, vibration exposure can increase over time. Regular HAV checks make sure your workplace stays safe and follows the rules.

At Sysco Environmental, we use special tools to measure vibration and figure out exposure levels based on HSE guidelines (L140).

Our experts give clear reports that explain each worker's daily exposure and suggest ways to lower risks, like changing tools, improving maintenance, or adjusting shifts.

Prevention is always the best option because once HAVS happens, the damage to nerves and blood flow is permanent. Stopping it is not only the right thing to do but also saves money by lowering sick days, claims, and penalties.

By taking action early, employers protect their most important thing: their workers.

Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome can be prevented. All it takes is knowing about it, checking for it, and taking safety steps.

Employers should take HAVS seriously, not just because the law says so, but because protecting workers from harm is the right thing to do.

If your company uses vibrating tools, contact Sysco Environmental for a HAV risk check or vibration monitoring survey. Our experts give clear, helpful reports to help you meet the rules and keep your employees healthy.
