What Lurks Beneath the Paint: A Hygienist's Take on Working with Lead pt 3

What Lurks Beneath the Paint: A Hygienist's Take on Working with Lead pt 3

In this final instalment of our 3-part look into what lurks beneath the paint, we delve into dealing with industrial-sized projects.

HS039: When You’re Dealing with Steel and Scale
"Treating Lead-Painted Metal Surfaces" (HS039) gets into the industrial side of things. Think bridges, tanks, railings — places where blasting and high-exposure risks are part of the job.

I worked on a bridge repaint where the original coating was cracked and flaking. Full abrasive blasting was required. We wrapped the scaffold in shrink wrap, installed negative pressure ventilation, twin HEPA extractors, perimeter air monitoring — the works. Thanks to HS039, we had clear documentation and defensible controls from the start.

Gold-standard advice:

  • Don’t remove if you don’t have to—encapsulate when you can.
  • Enclose and ventilate blasting and power-tool work.
  • Treat all resulting waste as hazardous.
  • Hygiene and decontamination procedures are non-negotiable.

FAQs on-site:
Q: Do we need full enclosures outdoors?
A: Yes, if you’re blasting. Especially near water, roads, or populated areas.
Q: What about the waste?
A: It’s hazardous. You need licensed storage, tracking, and disposal.

Final Thoughts
Lead is old-school, but the risks are as relevant as ever. If you’re an industrial hygienist, documents like HS032, HS034, and HS039 aren’t just guidance — they’re tools that help you explain, enforce, and protect.

Whether you’re on a school site, in a historic hall, or suiting up for bridgework, the rules remain the same:

  • Assume lead until you know otherwise.
  • Disturb as little as possible.
  • Control the dust like your health depends on it — because it does.
Got doubts? Test first. Strip later. Always.
