What COSHH actually requires
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 require employers to assess, control and review exposure to substances hazardous to health. A 'suitable and sufficient' assessment is one that is informed by measurement where exposure is reasonably foreseeable and where simple control banding cannot demonstrate adequacy.
When you need measured exposure data
Where the substance has a WEL and the process realistically generates exposure; where there has been a change in process, controls or workforce; following a regulatory request; following symptom reports; and as periodic verification of high-risk operations (cancer risk substances, sensitisers, asthmagens).
Sampling methods we use
Personal pumped sampling for vapours and gases (sorbent tubes, MDHS-validated methods), inhalable and respirable dust sampling (IOM and cyclone), passive diffusion badges for VOCs, real-time direct-reading instruments for spot screening, and bio-aerosol impactors where biological agents are in scope.

- Do I need exposure monitoring for every COSHH substance?
- No. Monitoring is required where exposure is reasonably foreseeable and where control adequacy cannot be confirmed by simpler means.
- What's the difference between a WEL and a guidance value?
- WELs are statutory limits set in EH40. Guidance values (BOHS, ACGIH, MAK) are advisory and used where no UK WEL exists.
- Can you cover multiple substances in one visit?
- Yes — we routinely combine sampling for multiple agents on the same survey to minimise cost and disruption.
- How often should COSHH assessments be reviewed?
- When circumstances change materially, or at intervals appropriate to the risk — typically annually for high-risk operations.
- Do you cover bio-aerosols?
- Yes — including endotoxin, mould spores and bacterial counts in occupational settings.
