Why lead is regulated separately
The Control of Lead at Work Regulations 2002 (CLAW) sit alongside COSHH and impose specific obligations: a written lead exposure assessment, statutory medical surveillance with blood-lead testing, action and suspension limits, and prohibited categories of work for young people and pregnant women.
How we sample
Personal breathing-zone sampling on IOM heads, analysed by ICP/MS for total lead. Surface wipe sampling against ASTM/HSL methods to demonstrate hygiene control. Where blood-lead surveillance is in place we coordinate with the appointed doctor.
Practical controls
Process enclosure, effective LEV (HSG258), wet methods where feasible, prohibition of eating in process areas, separate change facilities, hand-washing protocols, RPE selection and face-fit, and rigorous housekeeping with HEPA vacuum (never sweeping).

- 0.15 mg/m³ as an 8-hour TWA under CLAW. Action and suspension blood-lead levels are separately defined for adults and women of reproductive capacity.
- Do you do blood-lead testing?
- We coordinate with appointed doctors providing statutory medical surveillance — we provide the exposure data they need.
- Do you cover demolition of leaded buildings?
- Yes — including pre-demolition surveys and live-monitoring of high-risk operations.
