Workplace Noise Salisbury

Workplace Noise Exposure Assessment in Metal Polishing Factory in Salisbury

We recently conducted a workplace noise exposure assessment at an industrial facility in Salisbury. Our objective was to evaluate the noise levels employees are exposed to and recommend suitable control measures to ensure a safe working environment. The assessment was conducted in accordance with the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005.

During our assessment, we focused on various areas within the facility, including the wet polishing area, edge polishing and dry cutting/grinding booth, and the CNC and saws area. We measured the daily personal noise exposure levels (LEpd) and peak sound pressure levels (LCpeak) for operatives in these areas. The results indicated that some employees were exposed to noise levels exceeding the Upper Exposure Action Value of 85 dB(A), particularly during activities involving machinery and tools.

The findings revealed that noise levels for operatives in the saws and CNC machine areas ranged from 85 to 96 dB(A), with peak sound pressure levels between 139 to 143.5 dB(C). In the edge polishing area, noise levels reached 87 dB(A) with peak sound pressures at 133 dB(C). These levels necessitate the mandatory use of hearing protection in these areas.

To mitigate these exposures, we recommended several measures. These include reducing the pressure of compressed air lines, ensuring employees place items carefully into skips to minimise impact noise, and enhancing training on the correct use of ear plugs. We also suggested installing instructional signage and maintaining the mandatory use of hearing protection across the production areas. Additionally, a health surveillance programme for employees regularly exposed to noise levels above 85 dB(A) should be implemented.
